Final Word Count: 34,555

I didn’t hit my goal, but I am more than happy with my first attempt. I penned 34,555 words in 30 days. That’s an average of 1,152 per day. Which ain’t too shabby.

The outline continues to take shape and I think I’m piecing together a fairly decent storyline. I’ve set a tentative start date, which I’m keeping to myself for the moment in case I need to change it. Once I post my start date on the blog, that will be set in stone.
When I posted last night that I was going to write a novel, I meant it. I didn’t know I’d start today, however. I’ve got 1/3 of my outline done and am going to be using a slightly modified Hero’s Journey story arc.
I told my wife of my desire to write a novel and we talked about how fast of a writer I am. When it comes to research papers and other university assignments, I can write really fast. I always have. One of my main reasons for doing the 30-day novel experiment is to see if I can write fiction that quickly, because in my mind it just seems like an entirely different beast altogether. Will I be able to string storylines and dialogue together with the same ease that I do facts and figures? Or will it be fairly easy, considering the amount of fiction that goes into some of my papers? (kidding!)
I guess we’ll see. My goal is a 50,000-word novel in 30 days or less. I haven’t set a start date yet, but it will be before the end of May so I will finish before Summer.
Yep, gonna do it. I’ll be posting my progress here, but my goal is to do one of those 30-day speedwriting plans to keep the creative juice flowing. I’m going to take a week or two to prepare and I’ll post here when I get started.
I am a horrible blogger. Really. I suck at blogging. I want to blog. I have ideas to blog about, but I always forget, or run out of time, or something comes up… excuses, excuses.
I would like to blog more and I’m going to try to blog more. Keeping a blog current is a great writing exercise, and since writing is something I enjoy I need to be practicing it on a daily basis. Another reason I want to keep this up-to-date is because I will soon be embarking on a write-a-novel-in-30-days projects, and I am going to use my blog as a means of updating my friends and family on my progress. They can use it to give me a good kick in the rear, too, if and when I fall behind.
