Story Building

Written by Aaron on May 13th, 2009

As I get deeper and deeper into the planning stages of my 50,000-word novel project, I have been reading a lot about the art of story building. Story building is a storyteller’s ability to capture an incident in time, a singular moment or series of events, and convey the action, emotion, atmosphere and motivation behind that moment.

As my outline grows, I am amazed at how potential moments for the book bubble to the surface and make their presence known to me. I am starting to view story building as a giant cauldron of ingredients consisting of ideas, characters, locations and motivations all mixed together. As theseĀ  ingredients mingle in my the cauldron that is my brain, I am finding that my characters and story reveal to me the direction they need to go. Its a fascinating process that I hope I can turn into 50,000 words of pure literary bliss.

I would say my outline is about 60% done, and I will hopefully be announcing my start date soon.
